A survey of 780+ technical professionals was conducted from January 15 to February 16, 2024, to understand how they're using data when planning, building, and maintaining applications. The survey found that relational databases are the most popular choice among developers, but there's a growing trend towards multi-model databases, cloud services, and AI-powered databases. When it comes to database hosting, cloud-based hosting is the preferred method, with 94% of respondents using REST APIs and 73.8% favoring JSON Web Tokens for authentication. The survey also found that caching is a crucial aspect of data handling, with client-side caching being the most popular approach, followed by server-side caching. Additionally, developers are increasingly interested in islands architecture, micro-frontends, global stores, and composables to improve app performance and scalability. Finally, the survey highlighted the importance of AI in development, with 64% of respondents using AI for code generation, but also expressing concerns about AI's risks, particularly when it comes to database interactions.
