What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is software that interacts with its environment to autonomously perform tasks. It should be capable of making decisions and taking actions based on the information it receives from its environment, rather than simply following pre-defined instructions. An environment can be purely virtual, such as a web browser, or a physical environment.

There are several key characteristics of an AI agent:

  1. Autonomy: operates independently and makes its own decisions, without human intervention.
  2. Interactivity: interacts with its environment and responds to changes in the environment.
  3. Adaptability: learns from its experiences and adapt its behavior over time.
  4. Goal-oriented: aim to achieve a specific goal or set of goals through its actions.
  5. Reactive: An AI agent reacts to changes in its environment, rather than following a pre-defined plan.

Companies in the AI agent space are typically providing building blocks for putting together one or more AI agents that interact, call APIs and interact with proprietary data sets.
