The state of HTTP in 2022

HTTP, a foundation of the web and one of the Internet's most popular protocols, has been successful due to factors such as familiarity, availability of implementations, ease of use, reuse of existing mechanisms, presence in target deployments, and ability to traverse firewalls. The community working on HTTP actively maintains and develops the protocol to ensure interoperability and meet modern needs. In 2022, significant developments included the publication of HTTP/3, which uses QUIC as a replacement for TCP; deployment of Early Hints, an alternative to server push; and advancements in privacy-focused intermediation through MASQUE and OHTTP.
