Resilient Internet connectivity in Europe mitigates impact from multiple cable cuts
Two recent cable cuts in the Baltic Sea resulted in little-to-no observable impact on affected countries due to significant redundancy and resilience of Internet infrastructure in Europe. The BCS East-West Interlink submarine cable connecting Lithuania and Sweden was damaged, but no apparent impact to traffic volumes or internet quality metrics were observed. Similarly, the C-Lion1 submarine cable between Finland and Germany experienced damage with no significant disruptions to traffic volumes or internet quality metrics. Both countries have multiple redundant fiber routes within their borders as well as cross-border routes to other neighboring countries, enabling more resilient Internet connectivity. Building redundant and resilient network architecture is a best practice for mitigating the effects of cable cuts on internet connectivity.
