I'm Lisa Smith, I'm an engineering manager for Zapier's developer platform, and I'm An Old. I've been working in tech since before there was a Google. In a previous life, I was a librarian. The kind that touches actual hard-copy books. I recognize that tech has an ageism problem, which affects not only the person being discriminated against but also the larger company culture. It deprives the company of needed perspective and tools. The tech workforce is predominantly young, with 82 percent of workers under 40, so it's essential to have a plan to stay relevant unless you're Gen Z. I offer a three-step process: learn things, meet people, and apply for jobs. Learning new skills can help you stay relevant, meeting people can provide valuable connections, and applying for jobs can lead to opportunities despite perceived skill gaps.
