The Vonage Messages API now supports RCS Business messaging, a standardized interface for sending and receiving messages via SMS, MMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber, and now RCS. RCS allows larger file sizes and more interactivity than MMS, with advanced message types for displaying media and rendering buttons for suggested replies and actions. The Vonage Messages API leverages Google's RBM (RCS Business Messaging) servers and supports both outbound and inbound messaging, including custom message types such as suggested replies and suggested actions. Inbound messages contain data based on the message sent from the customer's device, while outbound messages can be structured to include various media types, such as images, videos, and files. The API also provides webhook updates for message status and context status. With the upcoming release of iOS 18, Apple will support RCS messaging natively in its built-in messaging app, expanding the reach of RCS messaging compared to specific messaging app channels.
