The Ericsson Holographic Communication (EHC) project enables fully immersive, real-time 3D experiences that can be built with consumer-grade mobile devices over 5G, providing a greater sense of spatial awareness and presence. The project was developed in collaboration with the Vonage Video API team and includes a demo for holographic video calls using the Vonage Video SDK and TrueDepth cameras on iPhones and iPads. Holographic communication has numerous use cases, including e-health and entertainment, where it can increase engagement, provide a sense of presence, and build trust between doctor and patient. To achieve this, new features were developed, including a WebRTC camera capturer to capture depth data and standard video data simultaneously, as well as a custom implementation of the WebRTC Multiplex codec to send depth data efficiently. The demo application was exhibited at Mobile World Congress and received positive feedback from attendees, suggesting that the technology could enhance efficiency, communication, and user experience across various fields.
