The Internet of Things (IoT) has grown rapidly, with enterprises and government agencies leveraging it to maximize efficiency and reduce expenses while improving service delivery. However, the technology landscape remains complex and fragmented, with no one-size-fits-all protocol capable of addressing all IoT use cases. This article provides an overview of wireless connectivity protocols, including their strengths, weaknesses, and recommended fields of application. The six main categories of wireless connectivity options are short-range solutions such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mesh networks (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread), long-range solutions like LoRaWAN, Sigfox, and licensed LPWAN (LTE-M, NB IoT). Broadband cellular connectivity is used for wide-area use cases that require higher throughput, lower latency, and larger data volumes. The article also discusses the growth of cellular IoT devices and how it is easy to deploy and scale, with tools available to speed up time to market and manage IoT deployment.
