When iOS 18.1 is released in October, Apple Mail for newer iPhones will use Apple Intelligence to summarize emails, significantly changing how previews or preheader text are displayed. Preview text, the first few sentences of an email seen in the inbox, can be modified by senders using CSS to display a different text at the top. In iOS 18.1 with Apple Intelligence, Apple Mail will rewrite preview text with a summary sentence or two, ignoring hidden sender-provided text. The feature will use an icon denoting its use of Apple Intelligence and offer an option to summarize entire emails into paragraphs. iPhones that include this feature are iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPhone 15 Pro models. However, the end of the preview text trick is not yet certain as senders should continue to include preview text for backward compatibility. The categorization or tabs feature will be introduced later this year with wider support than the summary features.
