InfluxDB IOx is a new project that will form the basis of the future core of InfluxDB, built with Rust and Apache Arrow. It aims to address the limitations of the current InfluxDB architecture, including unlimited cardinality, operator control over memory usage, replication, partitioning, topology, and bulk data export/import. IOx is designed to run as a loosely federated shared-nothing architecture, allowing operators to have full control over server behavior. The project uses Apache Arrow as its core, with DataFusion as the Rust native SQL query engine. It supports InfluxQL and Flux, while also supporting SQL through the use of Apache Arrow's columnar database capabilities. IOx is expected to be released early next year, with plans for integration into InfluxDB Cloud and Enterprise in the future.
