The true return on investment (ROI) of Artificial Intelligence is achieved through automation, which has led to the development of agentic architectures for various use cases and workflows. However, this has also created skepticism and predictions about standardization to make multi-agentic systems a reality. To address this, organizations are building AI-powered applications in silos using custom frameworks and architectures, highlighting the need for a standardized way to define, discover, and deploy agents, as well as a communication protocol for agent-to-agent collaboration. Critical infrastructure components such as deployment at scale, authentication, state management, encryption, and access to tools and capabilities are also essential for multi-agentic systems. An open collective called AGNTCY is working towards building and adopting critical open-source infrastructure components to address these challenges, inviting industry partners to join the effort to advance their specific domains and use cases.
