The music industry has shifted from owning physical CDs to streaming services, where users lose access to songs from past eras. Similarly, the authentication industry, specifically Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM), has been hijacked by multi-tenant SaaS offerings, compromising security and control over personal data. However, technical teams still have a choice in preventing this hijacking by opting for single-tenant SaaS deployments, which offer strong control and ownership of authentication resources. The shift to multi-tenant SaaS was largely driven by cost-cutting strategies and the growth expectations of venture capital-driven startups, leading to the majority of CIAM players adopting this model by 2025.
