Google has announced Android 12L, an interim update to the Android operating system that adds new features and refinements for large screen devices such as tablets, foldables, and Chromebooks. The update adapts the Material You design language to these devices, introducing a two-column layout for notification shades, lockscreens, and home screens, as well as a taskbar that allows users to quickly switch between apps without jumping back to the home screen or opening the recents overview. Android 12L also introduces adaptive UI patterns, improved letterboxing experience, and new tools to help developers design fully adaptive apps for large screens. The update is available in a developer preview build, which can be tested on Android Studio tools, and Google has released new reference devices across various Android Studio tools to help developers design responsive layouts for popular form factors. Additionally, Google Play will introduce changes to improve app recommendations for users with large screen devices, strengthening user trust, while Jetpack Compose now supports Material You, simplifying UI development for Android wearables.
