The FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) is a standard format for cloud cost data that simplifies the process of understanding and managing cloud costs. FOCUS normalizes multi-cloud cost data in a vendor-agnostic format, enabling users to analyze costs from all providers. The specification defines a set of columns that must or may be included in a cost and usage dataset, providing granular and consistent cost data across all providers. By adopting FOCUS, organizations can attain FinOps capabilities such as collaboration, budgeting, forecasting, unit economics, cost allocation, and more. Datadog is actively engaging with the FOCUS project, contributing to its development, and using the specification to provide a unified point of visibility for efficient monitoring of cloud costs. The use of FOCUS enables users like FinOps practitioners, finance team members, engineers, and stakeholders to see and talk about cost data using common language and tools, making it easier to launch and mature a FinOps practice.
