Summary

The UK is experiencing a cost of living crisis, driven by rising energy costs, with the energy price cap increasing by 54% in April 2022 and set to rise by another £800 in October. A powerful tool to help address this crisis is improved availability and analytics of energy data, which can provide insights into energy consumption efficiency, costs, and CO2 emissions linked to demographic factors. CARTO's data partner Doorda has shared the "Residential Energy Performance" dataset, which provides detailed information on energy consumption efficiency, costs, and CO2 emissions for domestic and commercial buildings in the UK. The dataset is based on Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) issued since 2008 and combines demographic data sources to create an extremely granular dataset with 169 individual variables. By analyzing this data, analysts can gain location-based insights into energy performance, allowing them to identify areas with the greatest potential for improvement and target specific building upgrades such as glazing and wall insulation. The dataset has been made possible through the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme and is available on CARTO's Data Observatory.
