Greenpeace USA and Canada used data visualization with CARTO to map the location of oil spills from pipelines owned by TransCanada, Kinder Morgan, and Enbridge, highlighting the proximity of these pipelines to water sources, major lakes, rivers, and gulfs across the United States. The map shows that nearly every part of the country is at risk for future spills, which have led to 20 fatalities, 35 injuries, $2.6 billion in costs, and over 34 million gallons spilled in the past decade. By emphasizing the threat posed by oil pipelines, Greenpeace aims to persuade citizens that the danger is not just an abstraction, and is asking the public to pressure JPMorgan Chase, which finances these pipelines, to prevent new constructions. The map also underscores the pervasiveness of the risk, with 373 spills totaling 63,221 barrels of hazardous oil since 2010, and a constant threat of spills due to the infrastructure required for oil extraction, refining, transportation, and sale.
