The ECIR23 conference, the leading European conference around Information Retrieval systems, recently took place in Dublin. The 4-day event offered a packed agenda on Content Search & Recommendation alongside world experts in the field. Attendees learned about new methods for data preparation and pre-processing, various algorithms for Information Retrieval and Recommender systems, and evaluating metrics to aim at content quality, diversity, and balance. The conference covered topics such as optimizing database queries for efficiency and cost, the challenges and opportunities of Large Language Models in Question-Answering systems, and semantic search. Keynote speakers included Mounia Lalmas from Spotify's approach to Personalized Recommendations, William Yang Wang on Challenges & Opportunities of using Large Language Models for QA applications, and Niels Reimers from Cohere on Opportunities and Challenges of Multilingual Semantic Search. The conference also featured industrial presentations applying algorithmic knowledge to concrete business use-cases, including Domain-Specific Retrieval, Recommender systems, Multimedia applications, and Next Generation Search. The event provided a perspective into fundamental advances in the field and offered opportunities to reflect on user experience, evaluation metrics, or content diversity.
