The project aimed to support local bands during the COVID-19 pandemic by creating a website where they could sell limited-edition poster prints and t-shirts. The team chose Algolia as their main tool for its front-end libraries that make it easy to spin up an ecommerce site with top-tier search and discovery experience. They designed two separate Algolia indexes: one for product information and another for inventory updates. This allowed them to display up-to-the-second inventory numbers while maintaining fast-as-you-type instant search results. The team used React as the front-end framework, leveraging Algolia's InstantSearch library and customizing its widgets to achieve their goals. They also implemented a solution to update the inventory index without impacting the main index used for <Hits>. By separating the data updates from the search processing, they were able to achieve both fast inventory updates and instant search results. The website aims to capture some of the energy of the local music scene by connecting artists' social media presences with an ecommerce platform.
