Helping build a safer Internet by measuring BGP RPKI Route Origin Validation
Cloudflare Radar has been tracking the deployment and effectiveness of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) Route Origin Validation (ROV), a critical security feature for protecting users from malicious route leaks. The analysis was based on data gathered from October 2022, covering approximately 96.5% of the world's Internet population. The study estimated that only 6.5% of global Internet users are currently protected by ROV, with Sweden and Bolivia leading the way in adoption. Countries such as Denmark, Greece, Switzerland, Sweden, Australia, Finland, and Chad have already achieved effective coverage above 50%, while the Netherlands and the United States remain below this threshold. To ensure a comprehensive assessment of ROV deployment, only ASes with an observed drop rate for RPKI-invalid requests greater than or equal to 95% were considered as fully protected. This resulted in a total of 261 million end users currently safe from malicious route leaks. However, there is still much work to be done before the world can declare BGP secure.
