How Location Data is Helping Solve Water Insecurity

Location data is being used by nonprofits and humanitarian relief agencies to tackle various challenges, including water insecurity. To address this issue, organizations are leveraging location intelligence to enrich water data through crowdsourcing and external sources. The Regional Food Security Analysis Network (RFSAN) and cMapIT have successfully employed location intelligence to build interactive maps of water resources in Syria and Nigeria, respectively. These initiatives have provided situational awareness of the countries' ongoing humanitarian crises while raising transparency on water supply and consumption levels. Additionally, data visualizations are being used to highlight issues such as lead contamination in drinking water across the United States and global fishing practices that contribute to ocean pollution. By making near-real-time data available, these efforts aim to promote public accountability and citizen engagement, ultimately driving change and informing decision-making for a more sustainable future.
