Introducing Airbyte Hack Days
Airbyte recently held its first internal hackathon, which lasted for 48 hours and resulted in 16 innovative projects. The event aimed to strike a balance between maintaining regular work pace and allowing time for creativity. Participants from across the organization pitched ideas, developed new workflows, and provided feedback throughout the process. Some of the notable projects included: 1. Connector Schema diagrams by Chris D., Marcos, Simon, and Sherif - Automatically generating Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD) within connector documentation to help users understand each connector's capabilities. 2. Adaptive Connector by Liren and Davin - Simplifying the development cycle for connectors on Airbyte Open Source and Cloud by making them adaptive based on deployment environment. 3. Airbuild (Workstation init script) by Benoit, Jimmy, Malik, and Topher - A tool to install system dependencies for working at Airbyte in a simple and idempotent way. 4. Cassettes by Alexandre and Pedro - Prototyping speedier regression testing for API sources using VCR.py to record HTTP interactions during test runs. 5. Octavia CLI metabase dashboard by Augustin - Developing a monitoring dashboard for the Airbyte CLI, allowing users to track its usage and identify potential issues. 6. Redesign documentation UX by Amruta, Sophia, and Grace - Reimagining the documentation homepage UI with an intuitive and user-centric design. 7. Automatic Airbyte releases by Lake and Charles - Writing a Github action to automatically generate new releases of Airbyte Open Source when a "bump version" PR is merged into master. 8. Connector CDK UI by Brian L. - Experimenting with a UI-based tool for developing API connectors, allowing users to build connectors in minutes. 9. Manager 101 by Jerri, Meghan, and Anita - Creating a Notion guide with tips and tricks for managing teams at Airbyte. 10. Design language CSS improvements by Edmundo - Updating the design system for the web application, including an updated color palette and SCSS variables. The hackathon concluded with presentations of all 16 projects, followed by voting on favorite projects in various categories.
