Databricks' release of Delta Lake has combined the best features of data lakes and data warehouses, creating what they call a "Lakehouse." The ideal system should support multi-table transactions, table and column-level permissions, structured and semi-structured data, efficient joins, SQL and procedural programming languages, and advanced statistics.
