Use HiveMQ and OpenTelemetry to monitor IoT applications in Datadog

What's this blog post about?

Large IoT environments consist of multiple layers of disparate devices that require secure and reliable data transfer between them. HiveMQ is an open source MQTT broker designed for enterprise-scale IoT fleets, providing visibility into each layer of the IoT environment to quickly identify problems with deployment. Datadog's HiveMQ integration collects metrics and event logs from HiveMQ, offering out-of-the-box dashboards that help visualize key data such as connections, disconnects, and message throughput. To provide visibility into IoT applications, HiveMQ's Distributed Tracing Extension enables users to instrument their workloads to generate OpenTelemetry-formatted distributed traces, which track application processes from end to end throughout the environment. By sending these traces to Datadog, users can use Application Performance Monitoring (APM) for more effective troubleshooting and root cause analysis. HiveMQ's extension and OTel support provide enhanced IoT observability across the environment, allowing users to monitor OpenTelemetry traces from IoT applications connected to the HiveMQ broker using Datadog APM.
