Internet disruptions overview for Q4 2022

During 2022, several regions experienced significant internet disruptions due to various factors such as government-directed shutdowns, cyberattacks, natural disasters, and technical issues with service providers. Iran faced some of the most widespread and prolonged internet disruptions in recent history as a result of the anti-hijab protests. In Ukraine, war-related damage led to extended power outages and network disconnections. Volcanic activity caused significant connectivity issues for Tonga after an undersea cable was severed. Meanwhile, earthquakes disrupted internet service in several countries including Japan, Mexico, and Turkey. Additionally, there were multiple instances of regional or national internet shutdowns or slowdowns in countries like Sudan, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Haiti, and Australia due to technical issues with service providers such as Access Haiti and Aussie Broadband.
